In 1991, the Pan-American High School was founded and financed by a group of parents who established the school as a separate entity, governed by a Board of Directors. The founders of the high school were determined to give their children the opportunity to continue their education under Pan-American School's unique philosophy and learning environment beyond sixth grade. In the year 2000, the High School merged with the Elementary School to form a single institution, and a joint Board of Directors was elected. Our curriculum is unique to our school. We adhere to all of the requirements of the Costa Rican Ministry of Education. The high school comprises grades 8-11, according to the Costa Rican educational system. The High School does not have a separate philosophy different from the Institutional Philosophy (revised in 2006) of PAS. Twenty-eight teachers and 220 students make up the High School. The students take the following classes in the indicated levels. There is an overall student-to-faculty ratio of 8 to 1, and an average class size of 15. This means that Pan-American students can benefit from individualized instruction, with attention to different learning styles and optimum academic achievement for each student. The school year at PAS runs from February to December. Our school day begins at 8:00A.M. to 3:11P.M, for a total of 38 class periods of 45 minutes each per week. Block scheduling is offered in selected courses, but is not applied throughout the curriculum. Co-curricular activities, such as art, crafts, yearbook, and clubs (Math Club, Chess Club, International Cooking, Adventure Club, etc.) are offered after school. We also have soccer teams for boys and girls. Students, in addition, have many opportunities for involvement outside the classroom in contests, debates, service learning projects, and student exchanges.
